Welcome to the Great Northern Theatre Company auditions.  Please take time to familiarize yourself with some information about our process. We are a family-friendly theater company, and all are welcome.

For A Christmas Story: The Musical there are roles in the cast for those ages 10+.

If you have an elementary-age child auditioning in the show, there will be expectations of the parents during practice. We'll talk about specifics at auditions and the first week of practice.

Rehearsal & Performance Schedule
A quality production comes from hard work and commitment on the part of everyone in the cast and crew. If members of the cast or crew are missing on days we didn’t expect, it creates confusions and is not fair to other members.  For this reason, we ask you to review the rehearsal and performance schedule prior to auditions.

Please think through conflicts with the rehearsals and performances before you audition. The rehearsal schedule will have a few variations each week. We have set the schedule to work around conflicts with the theater, as well as holidays during this busy time of year. It is CRITICAL that you review the attached schedule and list ALL conflicts on your audition form. Missing additional practices not listed is simply not an option.

We cast based on conflicts you are honest about, and if NEW conflicts arise, you MAY be re-cast.

Audition Materials

Reading
There is not an assigned piece to prepare for auditions. Everyone auditioning will be called up to read piece provided that night. Don’t worry if you don’t read for the part you are interested in performing. This portion of the audition just helps us see what you can do.

Vocals

Auditioners have two options for their vocal performance:
  • Select one of the provided excerpts from the show -OR-
  • Sing a prepared song of their own choosing. If opting for a song outside the show, auditioners should bring the accompaniment music on a Bluetooth-enabled device.

Choreography

Please review the video provided prior to auditioning. We will have limited time to review the dance at auditions and ask everyone to dance in groups. You are welcome to bring your dance or tap shoes to the audition if they help you perform the tap-focused choreography more effectively.

Have fun and don’t worry if you don’t have dance experience.
We work with people of all abilities.

Audition Tips

Here are some tips to keep in mind when auditioning:
  • Your audition begins when you first arrive and does not end until you leave the building. We’re looking to put together a team of actors who will work together well.   How you act off stage matters as much as how well you act on stage.
  • Attached to this document is a link to a vocal piece, a reading and dance material for auditions. While you do not have to have the material memorized, we would like you to come prepared.
  • Dress appropriately. Keep your hair out of your face and hands out of pockets. Wear rubber soled shoes you can move in.
  • When it's your turn to audition: Introduce yourself. Project! Articulate! Have a positive attitude! Have fun!
  • Don't say you can't do something. Try it. Directors want casts who are willing to take chances.
After the audition...Reflect on the lessons you've learned, but don't dwell on your performance. Many factors influence casting decisions, so it's unproductive to worry about the outcome. Instead, feel proud that you had the courage to audition - that's an accomplishment in itself. If you don't get cast this time, come back and try again. There will be other opportunities.
